The First Thanksgiving Shadowbox

Take a trip back in time with our First Thanksgiving Shadowbox.

MAKE YOUR OWN FIRST THANKSGIVING SHADOWBOX

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

DIRECTIONS:

PRINT your First Thanksgiving Shadowbox background.

CUT the background to size - the background is designed for a shadowbox measuring 5" x 7" in size.

PASTE the background onto the back wall of your shadowbox.

MAKE YOUR TEEPEE

PRINT your First Thanksgiving Shadowbox template onto thin cardstock- we used a brown kraft paper.

CUT the circle shape out of your First Thanksgiving Shadowbox template - this will be your teepee.

CUT along the dotted line printed on the circle, using it as a guide to cut your circle in half and leave a semi-circle.

COLOR the patterns on your semi-circle using your oil pastels.

TAKE a small piece of tape and STICK it along one half of the semi-circle's straight edge. Stick the tape so that the sticky side is facing up towards the face that is colored in.

FOLD your semi-circle around so that the two straight edges join at the tape, forming a teepee shape.

CHECK to see that the tape is securely holding the edges together inside the teepee.

MAKE yOUR HANGING ORNAMENT

CUT the long shape out of your First Thanksgiving Shadowbox template - this will be your hanging ornament.

COLOR the patterns on your shape using your oil pastels.

FOLD the shape in half horizontally so that each side is folded evenly, neither is longer than the other.

CUT around the shape so that only the hanging ornament shape remains.

OPEN the shape so it is no longer folded and POKE a small hole in the center of the shape using your x-acto knife.

CUT a small piece of string the length you desire and WORK it through the hole so that it comes through the other side.

TIE a small knot at one end of your string to make sure it doesn't slide out.

GLUE one side of your shape and FOLD the shape in half again, leaving some of the string inside the fold to stay.

HANG the ornament from the roof of your shadowbox using the string attached. You can use duct tape to hold the string to the roof.

MAKE YOUR CAMPFIRE FLAMES

CUT the three flames out of your First Thanksgiving Shadowbox template - these will be the stencils for your flames.

SEPARATE each flame by cutting them into individual squares.

USE clips or pegs to HOLD the flame stencil to the colored paper of your choice - red, orange or yellow.

CUT around the flame stencil until you are left with flames cut out of the colored paper. Repeat this as often as you like to make more or less flames.

USE the smaller colored flames to layer onto the bigger flames by using glue to STICK them onto one another.

TAKE a small amount of red sculpey and PUSH it onto the bottom of your flames. The sculpey will help to hold the flames up and stick them onto the base of your shadowbox.

FILL YOUR SHADOWBOX

COMPILE your shadowbox adding the hanging ornament, the teepee and the flames in their positions.

REMEMBER to pay attention to the way your shadowbox opens as this will decide how you fill your box. If the shadowbox opens from the back, be sure to fill your items facing the glass front.

USE different colored lentils, rocks or sand to sprinkle along the bottom of the shadowbox for a rocky effect.

BE SURE to have all items stuck in place - you don't want them moving around once you've finished.
