Make Nice Mission: Cultural Iceberg Placemat

The cultural iceberg is an “about me” project. On the top of the iceberg are things that people might know just by looking at us. Below the water the iceberg is filled with our interests, hobbies and other things that people will learn once they get to know us a little better. The trick to the iceberg is seeing how many more things fall below the surface compared to those we see up top.

The base of human rights begins with understanding that no one should be judged on their gender, religion, nationality or color. We are all equal no matter what we look like, and below the surface we may have a lot more in common than we think!

MAKE YOUR OWN ICEBERG PLACEMAT!

We made the cultural iceberg placemat for the teachers at H.E.A.R.T. to use in their classrooms and for you to use at home. We've made it extra easy by including some images to get the iceberg started.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Background Template
About Me Template
Scissors
Glue

DIRECTIONS:

PRINT the templates below for a background and the "about me" images. We like to print our background on paper that is 11" x 7" in size.

CUT the images you want to include on your placemat.

PASTE the pictures onto the background. Glue the things that people know by looking at you at the very top of the iceberg (your gender). Glue your hobbies, interests and other things that people need to learn about you at the bottom of your iceberg.

ADD more images - old photographs, images from magazines or drawings.

LAMINATE the page yourself or take it to your local Fedex Office and have them laminate it for you.

COMPARE your placemat with a friend and find out what things you didn't know about eachother and what things you have in common.
