Maggie’s Mission: Animal Haven, Holiday Edition

Maggie’s Mission: Animal Haven, Holiday Edition

It's that time of year again when our young contributor, Maggie Rose, likes to draw attention to the amazing dogs and cats at Animal Haven Shelter. This year, Maggie is encouraging people to by-pass their local pet store and head straight to the shelter to adopt a pet for the holidays. She's choosing a few of her favorite dogs and cats and giving us an idea of why they are so special. From fighting the myths of the black cat and pit bull, to caring for strays and seniors, remembering those with special needs and helping those who have been through hard times.

If you're thinking of getting your kids a new furry friend this holiday season, please make the effort to visit your local shelter and adopt an animal in need. Remember to be sure that you and your family are ready for the responsibilities that come with dogs and cats and think carefully before committing to the animal of your choice.

MEET THE DOGS AND CATS OF ANIMAL HAVEN SHELTER:

ADOPT A BIG DOG: MR. FANTASTIC

ADOPT A BIG DOG: MR. FANTASTIC

We're kind of obsessed with Mr. Fantastic. The only reason he is still at the shelter is because he keeps getting looked over due to his size! But apart from his size, his "Pit Bull" label is not helping his case. The myth of the Pit Bull is just that... a myth! Pits are no less loving, caring, cuddly, gentle or fun than any other "breed" of dog, and Mr. Fantastic is definitely proof of that. If you have the space to house this amazing guy, please adopt him today!

ADOPT A BLACK CAT: TIPS

ADOPT A BLACK CAT: TIPS

One of the biggest myths in the animal world is the myth of the black cat. Witches in disguise? Bad luck? We don't think so! Black cats are often the last to be adopted from the shelter and the first to be euthanized. Tips is just 1 year old and has already had a litter of kittens. She proved to be an incredibly loving mother but all of her kittens have been adopted while she awaits a forever home of her own.

ADOPT A SENIOR DOG: BIRDIE

ADOPT A SENIOR DOG: BIRDIE

Everybody wants a puppy for Christmas but not everybody can handle the responsibility that comes with it. That's where senior dogs are the better option. By adopting a senior you put a large portion of new-dog responsibilities behind you. It's likely a senior will already be potty trained and socialized, will have less energy to expend, and will not require 24/7 attention and guidance. Birdie is an 8 year old senior who is up for adoption at Animal Haven.

ADOPT A DECLAWED CAT: JOSEPHINA

ADOPT A DECLAWED CAT: JOSEPHINA

A lot of people don't realize that declawing is not just the clipping of a cat's nails, but actually an amputation of their bones. Declawing can cause pain and can lead to less active cats due to tenderness in the feet. Cats may have an inability to scratch and stretch normally, and can become depressed. Josephina was declawed by her previous owners and is looking for a more understanding and painless forever home.

ADOPT A PIT MIX: BRUDDA

ADOPT A PIT MIX: BRUDDA

Ever noticed how so many of the sweet dogs in the shelter are pit mixes? Unfortunately, that's due to another myth! The myth of the "Pit Bull." But these sweet dogs that are plagued with the label are no less loving, gentle, sweet and adorable than any other dog in the shelter. If brought up in a loving and attentive home, a pit mix can be the best dog you ever bring into your home. Brudda is a sweet, playful boy who is waiting at Animal Haven hoping to make a new friend.

ADOPT AN ABANDONED CAT: CHICA

ADOPT AN ABANDONED CAT: CHICA

Lost or abandoned stray cats often have trouble finding food and shelter. They can be driven away from food sources by local feral cats, and can stop grooming because they feel stressed. Chica was abandoned this past summer and was skin and bones with very little hair left on her back. She was rescued and brought into Animal Haven where she is looking for someone to make up for the neglect she faced.

ADOPT A STRAY DOG: ST. LUCIA

ADOPT A STRAY DOG: ST. LUCIA

Dead Dog Beach is one of the many beaches in Puerto Rico that is known for its stray dog population. Abuse of the strays is a common occurrence, with some used in gang rituals and target practice, and others being run over by cars on the island. St. Lucia was rescued by the Sato Project and brought over to Animal Haven. He is only 6 months old and is still getting used to the noises of the big city but its ready to be given a second chance at a better life.

ADOPT A PAIR OF KITTENS: THE CALI KITTENS

ADOPT A PAIR OF KITTENS: THE CALI KITTENS

There's no resisting the cuteness of a kitten, but did you know that it's unnatural for a kitten to grow up without its siblings or other cats? Single kittens who grow up without friends to chase and play with can become frustrated, which can lead to unwanted behaviors like scratching. If you're thinking of getting a kitten this holiday season, the Cali Kittens are 9 weeks old and up for adoption at Animal Haven. Adopt them both!

ADOPT AN ANIMAL WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: GRACE

ADOPT AN ANIMAL WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: GRACE

Lots of dogs and cats end up in shelters because their owners are unable to care for their special needs. Many of these needs, however, can be treated and cured with the right attention and medical care. Grace is currently facing a spinal injury that is common with her breed. She is expected to make a full recovery and will be so happy when she is able to walk without pain in the comfort of her new forever home. Go visit her today!

Maggie knows that it may take some time for these dogs and cats to get adopted and find new homes and so she asks you to purchase them some holiday gifts in the meantime. Animal Haven has created a wishlist on Amazon.com with many items that their dogs and cats could use. We encourage you to help Maggie on her mission and give these animals everything they need this holiday season.
