Barbie: From Desperate to Divine

Barbie: From Desperate to Divine

- By Tracey Stewart

Part of my problem with Barbie was the lack of non-trampy clothes she had to choose from. In Mattel's defense, I've seen girls who are given the cool jeans, full-coverage jacket and comfortable flat shoes option consistently turn back towards the hot pink, silver and sparkled mini-dress and toe-pinching stilettos. But my battle with Barbie led me to a wonderful discovery.

I did however find a way to expand her wardrobe (with more coverage and beautiful patterns) when I discovered that there are sweet wonderful women designing beautiful clothes for Barbie on

Below are links to our favorite designers, and a little bit about them! Enjoy basking in the bounty:

"I am a 30 year old mommy of 3 beautiful daughters, they are 2, 6, and 9. I love baking, sewing, creating, cooking, mountains and waterfalls. I am a stay-at-home mom. I had opened a bakery. I cooked out of my house and sold it to local shops.  I was doing very well with my baking business until I started getting very nauseated every time I opened the oven and smelled delicious baked items, well that was because of baby #3!!  My pregnancies are never easy and I was put on bed rest for 5 months (that was when I discovered Etsy, so it wasn't all bad) and after I had her I had 3 kids, one of whom was a newborn, there really wasn't anyway to continue my baking business."

"I started sewing my own Barbie doll clothes by hand when I was 8. I continued to make doll clothes as a teenager for the girls I baby-sat. Then for my nieces, great nieces and grandchildren. I love to see the faces of children light up when they receive a new outfit. Children are so very precious"

Brushes and Bodkins
"I have sewn since I was a child and love all types of crafts and have tried most. I particularly love making dolls clothes to fit Barbie dolls (both old and new)."

Dizzy Dames
"My Mom, Esther, and I collaborate in our store Dizzy Dames. We love designing and sewing for Barbie. I owned a #1 Barbie as a child and never out grew my love of the fabulous clothes."

Grandma Linda's House
"My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 12 and I've been sewing off and on ever since. I'm the mother of two adult children. We have a beautiful 6-year-old granddaughter (our little princess) and a grandson who turned 1 in August. My husband and I are both retired and now I have lots of time to pursue my hobbies. I am very happy to have found Etsy as an outlet for my creativity."

WOW! I just put a WHOLE BUNCH of Barbies on eBay (santas2sell if you’re looking) because I WAS going to try repainting their faces but after trying it on a little bit larger doll…forget it!
I have a whole new appreciation for you artists, Barbie hairstylists, AND designer of all of those great clothes!
